Cherry Pie

Beth SageJuly 9, 2024July 5, 2024

I’m allergic to gluten. So is my son. And my husband doesn’t like cherries. These things are true. A generous soul bought the entire pie as we left the restaurant. She asked me to cut a piece for her and then with her big smile and her bright twinkly eyes, she handed me the remaining pie. I told her days before that I am allergic to wheat and it was confusing to her. She is 91. I am her companion as she transitions to her life in assisted living. Her favorite thing is to go out to eat and so that’s what we did on Independence Day.

You showed me your way Jesus. I put four large pieces in containers with forks and spoons and whip cream. I packed up the bag and added four waters. I drove to the spot I had seen a gathering of homeless in the morning earlier last week and the grass was empty. I drove to the train station. I didn’t see any Lord. I went to the bank and as I pulled the bank door open, I saw them. A daddy and his young girl were making their way through the parking lot. She was carrying a bottle of water and her stuffed animal.

I returned to my car, grabbed two containers of pie and asked if he would like cherry pie. He was a bit reserved and said he was living at the shelter and had just gone to get water for his boys. And then I asked, could I give him all. I gave him the bag with the four containers of pie, the whip cream topping on each and the spoons and forks, the napkins and the waters. All Lord for your glory. All contained in the bag.

Lord, it was for them. Your chosen ones. Lord, thank you for the generosity of the one being passed to the other and passed to another, this precious family. Thank you for your perfect way Lord. And the twinkle in the little girl’s eyes reminded me of her twinkle yesterday as she gifted the entire cherry pie, all but her one slice. Thank you Lord for including me in this divine transfer.
